Prepare your tourist application while you search
The tourist category is for leisure travel when you arrange your own accommodation. If you will stay with family or friends legally residing in Portugal, the visitor family or friends category is different. VFS says a Schengen application may be submitted up to six months before travel; that window does not indicate when appointments will be available.
Organise originals and photocopies. VFS says to present original documents and submit photocopies unless a specific original is required. Its guidance includes a completed and signed application form, a personal statement explaining the reason for travel and a passport issued within the last ten years. The passport needs at least two blank pages and must remain valid for three months after departure from the Schengen area.
Check that transport and accommodation evidence covers the whole itinerary. For visits to more than one Schengen country, include travel between those countries. Accommodation evidence should cover the full stay and show your name, dates and address. Travel insurance must cover the entire stay and all Schengen countries, with at least EUR 30,000 cover for medical emergencies and repatriation.
The checklist also requests three months of bank statements showing your name and address, with an end balance dated within the month before submission.
