Brentwood applicants seeking a Portugal tourist visa should use the VFS Portugal Visa Application Centre in London. Essex is on the centre’s residence list, so people legally resident in Essex meet its location condition, subject to the other visa requirements.
Want help spotting a suitable date? Portugal Visa Alerts’ London appointment search sends optional matching notifications. Prepare your application and attendance plan so you can respond if a date works.
Essex residence and the right centre
VFS requires applicants to reside in a location on the London centre’s list. Essex is included, and residents assigned to the Portuguese Consulate in London submit at its VFS centre. The address is 66 Wilson Street, EC2A 2BT. This is a residence-based route, not a choice based simply on which centre is convenient.
Living in Essex meets the location condition, but does not establish eligibility for every visa or applicant. UK applications normally require a valid passport or travel document and valid UK residence permission. Schengen applications should be made in the country where you legally reside. Portugal must be the sole or main destination, with the main destination judged by length of stay or purpose. If no main destination can be identified, responsibility rests with the country whose external Schengen border you enter first.
Check that the tourist category fits
This page concerns the short-stay Tourist category, including applications for children. VFS describes it as leisure travel where you arrange your own accommodation. If you will stay with family or friends, or travel for another reason, check VFS visa type guidance rather than assuming Tourist is right. UK short-stay C-visa holders are not generally eligible for tourist travel; acceptance is limited to essential travel and depends on assessment by the Mission.
VFS says a Schengen application may be submitted up to six months before intended travel. This is a planning window, not a promise of a date. Select the correct category and centre in the official VFS appointment service. Every applicant, including children and infants, must attend in person with an appointment booked online.
Make a plan for scarce dates
If the calendar has no suitable appointment, check that you selected Portugal, London and the correct category. Decide which dates you could realistically attend, allowing for work or caring commitments and the journey to Wilson Street. A date is only useful if you can attend with your application and documents ready.
Paid search starts after confirmed payment. When a matching appointment is detected, Portugal Visa Alerts sends an email notification on this route. SMS notifications are available where enabled, supported and possible, but carrier delivery is not guaranteed. A notification does not reserve an appointment: you book personally through VFS. Neither notification nor booking speed is guaranteed.
Prepare your evidence while you wait
Use the checklist for your category and organise originals and photocopies. VFS guidance lists a completed and signed form, a personal statement explaining the trip, passport evidence, travel and accommodation details, insurance and financial evidence. Check the requirements for your circumstances; the Mission may ask for additional documents.
Some evidence needs attention close to submission. The checklist asks for three months of bank statements showing your name and address, with an end balance dated within the month before applying. Travel and accommodation evidence should cover the full itinerary. Employed applicants need a recent employer letter and three months of payslips. Recheck document dates after booking and consult VFS guidance on what to bring before attending.
Plan for your visit to Wilson Street
VFS lists London submission hours as Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 13:00, and passport collection on weekdays from 16:00 to 17:30. Check the London centre page before travelling and follow your appointment confirmation. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, not centre staff.
If you are ready for paid search support, start the London Portugal appointment notification service. Keep the official VFS route available too, and complete the booking yourself when you find a date you can attend.
