Manchester is one route from Hinckley
VFS lists Leicestershire among the areas whose residents may apply at its Manchester or Edinburgh Portugal centres. The published list does not set separate county boundaries for the two centres. Your route is determined by legal residence, not simply which centre seems nearest.
Edinburgh is a satellite centre representing the Portuguese Consulate in Manchester. VFS says applications submitted in Edinburgh are sent through its Manchester office to the mission. Portugal must also be responsible for your Schengen trip: usually because it is your sole or main destination by length or purpose of stay. If no main destination can be determined, responsibility rests with the state where you first intend to cross the Schengen external border.
Choose the Tourist category and book online
This page covers the short-stay Tourist category for leisure travel where you arrange your own accommodation. Check VFS’s visa type identification page to make sure Tourist fits your plans; other categories have different requirements.
Appointments are booked online through VFS. Every applicant, including a child or infant, must attend in person on the appointment date. Use the official VFS booking page, select the centre and category, and choose only a date you can attend with your application ready.
When no suitable dates appear
An empty calendar or unsuitable dates do not change the residence rules. Check that you selected the right centre and category, then revisit the official booking page. The VFS booking guidance does not give a verified release timetable, so check for current dates rather than relying on an assumed day or hour.
Portugal Visa Alerts offers optional search support, not the booking itself. After payment is confirmed, the search starts and an email notification is sent when a matching appointment is detected. SMS notifications may be available where enabled, supported and possible, but carrier delivery is not guaranteed. A notification does not reserve a place: you book personally through VFS. Neither notification nor booking speed is guaranteed.
Get your application papers ready
Use the VFS Tourist, Business and Visitor checklist, and check current requirements before relying on it. Tourist applicants should prepare the signed application form, passport and copies, travel and accommodation evidence, travel insurance and financial evidence. Your passport needs at least two blank pages, must have been issued within the past ten years and must remain valid for at least three months after departure from the Schengen Area.
Check document dates as well as contents. The checklist requests three months of bank statements showing your name and address, with an end balance dated within the month before submission. Employment and study evidence also has issue-date conditions. UK residence evidence may include a digital immigration share code; your residence must remain valid for at least one month beyond your trip’s return date.
Keep originals available for presentation and prepare photocopies unless an original is specifically required. If your trip includes more than one Schengen country, include travel between them. An organised folder makes it easier to act when a suitable appointment date appears.
