Check the London residence condition
VFS lists the London centre at 66 Wilson Street, London, EC2A 2BT. Greater London appears on its published residence list. Check the London residence list against your address before booking.
The centre you can use depends on your residence jurisdiction, not simply which location has an appointment. Applicants in the Portuguese Consulate in London’s jurisdiction submit at the London VFS centre. Those in the Manchester consular jurisdiction use Manchester or Edinburgh. The lists include historical and overlapping place names, so check with VFS if your address is unclear.
Schengen applications are made in your country of legal residence. UK submission normally requires a valid passport or travel document and valid UK residence permission. Portugal must be your sole or main Schengen destination. For a multi-country trip, the main destination is determined by length of stay or purpose; if neither identifies one, the first external-border country is responsible.
Confirm the tourist category fits
The tourist category covers leisure, recreation or sightseeing when you arrange your own accommodation. If you will stay with family or friends, travel for business or have another purpose, check VFS’s visa-type guidance before searching.
A UK short-stay C visa does not generally qualify you for an ordinary tourist application. VFS says acceptance for C-visa holders is limited to essential travel and depends on the mission’s assessment.
Every applicant, including children and infants, must attend in person with an appointment booked online. Use the official VFS booking page to make your appointment.
How appointment alerts fit the process
The paid search starts after payment is confirmed. When a matching appointment is detected, this email-enabled route sends an email. SMS is available where enabled, supported and possible, but delivery by your mobile carrier is not guaranteed.
A notification does not reserve or hold a date. You book personally through VFS; neither notification nor booking speed is guaranteed. Alerts are optional, and you can check the official calendar yourself.
Before using alerts, decide which dates you could attend and keep your travel plans in view. A notification is useful only if you can act on the date; check the appointment details on the official booking page before completing your booking.
Prepare documents while you search
VFS allows Schengen applications up to six months before intended travel. Review its tourist, business and visitor checklist, dated August 2025, and confirm current requirements before applying.
The checklist includes a signed application form, passport, UK residence evidence, travel and accommodation details, insurance and financial records. Your passport must have been issued within the last ten years, contain at least two blank pages and remain valid for three months after departure from the Schengen area. A digital share code is accepted as residence evidence; your UK residence permission must remain valid for at least one month beyond your return.
Make sure travel and accommodation evidence covers the full itinerary and identifies you, the dates and accommodation address. Include travel between Schengen countries if visiting more than one. Insurance must cover the entire stay in all Schengen countries, with at least EUR 30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation. Financial evidence includes three months of bank statements showing your name and address, with an end balance dated within the month before submission.
Bring original documents for presentation and prepare the required photocopies. Arrange stable documents early, then update time-sensitive records nearer the appointment. Check VFS’s guidance on what to bring. Children and infants attend in person; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
