Check residence and visa conditions
VFS requires Portugal visa applicants in the United States to apply in person at a Visa Application Centre, regardless of visa category, and to use the centre with jurisdiction over their residence. Check with VFS which listed location is appropriate for you before booking.
For the US application route, Portugal’s guidance requires a valid passport or travel document and a valid US residence permit. If you hold a US B1/B2 short-stay visa, the guidance says to apply for a Schengen visa from your country of residence. The route’s residence requirement is distinct from simply having a US visa.
Prepare for a short-stay visit
Tourism, including visits to family or friends, is a listed short-stay purpose. Use VFS’s visa type guidance to check that category C fits your trip. Business, transit and other purposes may require different supporting evidence.
For a category C application, prepare the completed and signed form and your original passport. The checklist also calls for a recent colour photograph measuring 35 by 45 millimetres, a roundtrip flight reservation showing departure and return dates, and accommodation evidence for the whole stay or a statement of responsibility.
Before printing, check the photograph as well as the document list: it should be no more than six months old, against a light background, with a clear, full-face, non-smiling image. Attach it to the form. The checklist also requests photocopies of prior passports and Schengen visas.
The checklist requests travel medical insurance covering emergencies and repatriation, with minimum cover stated as EUR 30,000 or USD 50,000. It also lists work and salary evidence and the last three bank statements as proof of means for the stay and return. Requirements can depend on your circumstances and purpose; the Consulate may ask for further documents.
