For a Portugal visa appointment from Durham, North Carolina, VFS Global’s jurisdiction listing places North Carolina in the group that includes Washington DC, Chicago, Houston and Miami. It does not map each state to one particular centre.
If you are struggling to find a suitable date, Portugal Visa Alerts can send notifications when a matching appointment is detected. You book directly with VFS.
Check the centre before booking
VFS requires applicants to book at the Visa Application Centre with jurisdiction over their residence. The currently linked jurisdiction table lists North Carolina in the Washington DC group and names Washington DC, Chicago, Houston and Miami. It does not specify which individual centre North Carolina residents should use, so confirm the correct location before arranging travel.
VFS lists the Washington DC centre at 1025 Vermont Ave NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005. Submission hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 15:00. Check the jurisdiction information and Washington DC centre page for current booking details.
Check your residence and visa category
VFS lists a valid passport or travel document and a valid US residence permit as country-level requirements. If you hold a US B1/B2 short-stay visa, VFS instructs you to apply for a Schengen visa from your country of residence. Being resident in North Carolina does not by itself establish every part of your individual eligibility.
This page covers Portugal short-stay category C, including tourist visits to family or friends. VFS requires applications to be submitted in person at a Visa Application Centre, regardless of category. Use its visa-type guidance to check that your travel purpose matches the category you intend to apply for.
Respond to an appointment notification
The alert search starts after confirmed payment. When a matching appointment is detected, this email-enabled route sends an email notification. SMS is available where enabled, supported and possible, but carrier delivery is not guaranteed. A notification does not reserve or hold an appointment.
After an alert, check the date and centre, then complete your booking personally through the official VFS appointment system. Have your passport details and likely travel dates ready so you can review the available booking options. Neither a notification nor a particular booking outcome is guaranteed.
Prepare your tourist application documents
For a category C application, print and sign the application form, prepare a recent colour photograph measuring 35 by 45 mm, and check that your passport remains valid for three months beyond your Schengen stay. Bring the original passport; VFS also asks for copies of previous passports and Schengen visas. Keep copies of your important documents, as submitted documents other than the passport and payment receipt are not returned.
The checklist requests a roundtrip flight reservation, accommodation evidence for the full stay or a statement of responsibility, and travel medical insurance covering emergencies and repatriation. Its stated minimum cover is €30,000 or USD 50,000. Work and salary evidence, together with the last three bank statements, are also requested as proof of means for the stay and return.
Requirements can vary with your circumstances, and VFS says its list is not exhaustive. Review the category C checklist and what to bring before your appointment. A minor attending the Washington DC centre must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Plan around your appointment
The Washington DC centre lists passport collection as Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 15:00, as well as weekday submission during those hours. Check the centre page for accessibility information and public holidays before setting off, and organise your documents so they are ready to present.
If you are still looking for a date, start appointment alerts for the Washington DC route. When notified, verify the details with VFS and book through its official system.
